Is Drive Lube The Same As Gear Lube Is "Drive Oil" The same thing as lower gear lube? | Boating Forum
I asked the Mercruiser Customer Rep if water getting in is a problem, and he said that the Mercury High Performance Gear Lube was made to work
Although drive lube and gear lube have the same function-lubrication-they are not the same. They have different viscosity and weights,
I was about to post the same thing. Mercruiser fluids are “sufficent”, not optimal. You cant buy a finer true synthetic marine outdrive gear
This is the drive lube you should be using. Merc recommends against mixing other oils and high performance gear lube. The specifications for the
DRIVE-H Outdrive Lubricant is the CURE for lubrication-related failures in marine drives and lower units. It is a highly additized semi-synthetic lube available
Quicksilver Hi-Performance gear lube or 90 weight gear lube. Here is the link to Quicksilver brand from Mercury Marine.
That little tank is the overflow reservoir for gear lube in your outdrive. There should be a fill line on it, there's no need to fill it above that.
Here are the virgin samples of each. I find this info interesting as I was told by the dealers how they were the same and no different except for packageing.
Gear oil = Drive oil, Outdrive oil, Sterndrive oil, Etc. Gear oil DOES NOT = Outboard oil that's for outboard engines that are 2 stroke :)
Drive lube and gear lube the same. However I would take that bottle back and exchange it for synthetic blend if it isn't.
